My Problem with Summer

Hey there.  When I was a kid, summer was awesome.  No school, no homework, nothing to worry about but play video games, wrestle with friends, and general childhood mischief.  Sounds like a pretty bad ass time to me.  As an adult...  summer is not so great.  I know that it can get hotter in other places, but summer in LA sucks.  The commute to and from work here is so bad, that you spend a lot of time stuck on the freeway and with a scorching sun beaming down on you, you're going to get sweaty.  Even though the AC is on blast, the fact that you're in a heated metal box for a long while will slowly negate that AC of yours.  Then there's the prob with people in offices across LA.  People... it's hot outside!  Let's be merciful to those that just came in from that blazing sun and turn on the AC!!!  If you start complaining (ahem ahem... you know who you are) then you should be shot!  lol  I would rather be in a cold office than a hot one.  If you're cold, it's easy to slip into a sweater or jacket.  If we keep the office hot... there's nothing you can do to remedy that.  No amount of water or drinks, no fan, no anything will dispel the heat from your body.  I can be walking around naked in the office and still feel hot.  (It's not a pretty sight, friends.  Don't make me go there) lol

Now, I'm not saying all of summer is bad...  Out of the 3 months or so of uncomfortableness, they'll be a few days where we'll go out to the beach and take in some of that sun and splash around in the Pacific Ocean.  The big difference between beach day and work day???  Beach day = fun where as work day = work.  lol  And working while all sweaty sucks.  I'm just saying...

I think I'm going to write a strongly worded letter to the Mayor.  See if I can convince him of giving us Los Angeles workers some mandatory, PAID, time off to go to the beach during the week.  It's that... or we will all take a page out of Al Bundy's book and grab some lawn chairs and hang out in the frozen food section of the local market.  Either way... I'm down.  lol  Later!

Experiencing Nintendo's Wii's New Super Mario Bros.

Hey there. Hope you all had a great and safe 4th of July weekend. The 4th of July is extra special to me, not only because of the 3 day weekend, but because it's also my daughter's birthday. She's been hinting for month's that she wants her own Nintendo DS. In terms of portable gaming systems... the kids have 2 PSPs and a DS, but she's been wanting her own. So I stroll into Gamestop planning on getting her one, when I see that they have Wiis on sale. Hmmm... the kids have also been asking us for a Wii, but we figured we have too many games at home. Out of curiosity, I ask the guy how much the DS is and how much for the Wii. Wii = $120, DS = $150. What?!?!?! The Wii is cheaper than a DS!!! So I went with the Wii. I also picked up the New Super Mario Bros game which I know she would love since she plays it when we're at Target or Gamestop.

So I venture home, wrap it, and hand it her. She is happy with her Wii! I hook it up and I started setting it up. I did have a difficult time with synching the controllers. I wasn't sure exactly how to do it but since I'm so used to the XBOX 360,I figured that it would work in a similar fashion. Once the game started and I got both controls working, the kids played on.

I'm really liking this New Mario Bros game. It's old school roots are definitely there but the multiplayer mode has a completely new twist: you play simultaneously. Whereas the old game would allow one player to play at a time... this one will place the players (up to 4) all on the screen at once! It makes it that more challenging, and fun, to play with a friend and get through a stage as a team. I also think it's a great tool to subtly hint at teamwork. Especially for young ones that still don't grab the concept of working together for a common goal. It's completely different than the "wait my turn" approach that many of the previous Mario titles thrived on.  It's a fresh idea that makes for a more enjoyable experience.  Especially for those with family members that are willing and ready to take on video game challenges.  lol

I'm still new to whole thing and am working through the settings to see what I can do with a Wii. I'm under the impression that it is online compatible... but I don't think I've set it up yet and I haven't seen where I can create profiles for myself and the kids... I guess once I start clicking on buttons, I'll find out how. lol So... any suggestions on any bad ass online games? If so, let's hear em. I'm down for some online competition! Until then, later!

Happy Mother's Day (Oh Yeah... and Happy Birthday to Me)

Hey there.  To all you mothers out there, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!  I know it was yesterday, but I didn't have a chance to post and figured I'd do it now.  Yesterday was also my birthday!  Knowing that Mother's Day would overpower any birthday, my wife set up a dinner for us on Saturday night.  We set out to eat with my mother and brother and we caught the Laker game all the while.  One hell of a game, it was.  Afterwards, we headed back to our place where the cake was the talk of the town.

I should've taken a picture of it, but I didn't, so I'll have to wait until they are Emailed to me, but the cake was kinda odd looking.  It was about 5 inches high and seemed more like a block of frosting than a cake.  My bro claimed that he made it and that's why it's funny looking.  Fair enough.  I'll buy that.  After watching a few episodes of The Office, we cut the "cake".  As I was about to slice through it, I noticed some silvery substance sticking out of it.  What the...  So I look closer and it's saran wrap wrapping a box.  No wonder it was funny looking.  It turns out that it was a box containing a Dwight Bobble Head doll.  How bad ass is that!  lol  We all laughed and my bro confessed that he wanted to put the box in jello but that they couldn't find a big enough container.  That would have been classic, but the cake thing is just as good.

Yesterday, my wife and I woke up to our gifts.  Me, for my birthday and her for Mother's Day.  I ended up getting her this one leopard bag from Betsey Johnson that I thought was pretty cool.  Aside from the standard leopard print, it had lightning bolts on it which I thought was pretty awesome.  She loved her purse and then presented me with my gift.  The wrapping was pretty cool.  It was home made by the kids and the paper had all kinds of stuff sprawled across it.  Words like "daddy"  happy birthday" and "Pantera" (lol).  I opened it carefully to void ripping the paper and uncovered Final Fantasy XIII.  Does my babe know me or what?!  lol  I've been wanting it for sometime  but I'm not one to dish out full price for a game unless I really want it (Guitar Hero: Metallica) or it's a collector's item (Final Fantasy XII).  I thanked her for it and reminded her that I'll be missing for awhile.  I'll be there physically, but my mind will be on Final Fantasy.  lol

We then got dressed and we treated my mother and mother in law out to breakfast at Mimi's Cafe.  It's always a good time when we get together and laugh it up.  After we over stuffed ourselves, we took off to the mall and treated my mother in law to a mini shopping spree.  She was able to go to any store and choose out of stuff.  After wards, we intended to go to the park and spend some time with the kids.  That didn't happen.  As soon as we got home after the mall, the wind really picked up and it didn't seem like the best of ideas to take the baby outside.  So my wife and I decided to stay in, order a pizza, and watch Beyond Belief.  Later in the evening, she baked me a cake.  A REAL cake, lol, and my family sang happy birthday to me.  All in all, a great weekend.

New Neighbors and Religion

Hey there.  About a week or so ago, we got to meet our new neighbors.  The family that lived there before moved out and it turns out that they are renting out their home.  It turns out the the neighbors are good people.  They seem friendly and they have kids that seem to get along great with our kids.  They call each other over, which seems like every day, and they hang out and have a good time.  Which is great, because the kids didn't really play as much with the previous neighbor kids even though we would push them to go play so it's a good thing that they hit it off right away with the new neighbor kids.  On Saturday, though, they came home from being next door and asked if they could go to church with the neighbors on Sunday morning...

Now...  we're not really church going individuals.  I strongly believe that people can worship however they see fit and if going to a church every Sunday is their thing, then go on, my friend.  But us, we're not those kind of individuals.  My wife and I are also not one to block our kids from what we don't do so they expressed interest in going to church.  Which is fine... but considering that the neighbors have only been there about a week or so seems too recent to allow them to take off with our kids.  I don't know... I don't feel comfortable with that idea.  Knowing that our kids are not exactly early birds... we told them that if they got up, got dressed, and cleaned their rooms by 8:30 the next morning, they can go.  Of course, they slept right through the morning and got up closer to 10 am without a mention of church.

The question I pose to you, dear readers, is how do you feel with the notion of allowing your young ones to accompany a neighbor to their family outing?  Something doesn't feel right about allowing your kids to go with a neighbor... I mean, unless, they are extremely close with the family and are like best friends for life.  Since we've only known the family for a little over a week, are they out of place by asking the kids if they want to join them?  I don't know.  The whole thing seems a little odd and uncomfortable so I'm wondering how others have dealt with similar situations.  Until then... Later.

Alice in Wonderland Theme Party

Hey there.  Tonight we're off to my comadre's birthday party.  We're some fun loving people and we like to do things a little different.  Considering that Alice in Wonderland was remade and she's a huge Johnny Depp fan, she decided that she's throwing herself an Alice in Wonderland theme party.  Who's being who was decided long ago and it turns out that I was meant to be one of the guards.  The card guard, I suppose.  lol  So today, I started on my get up.

I saw that we had this cardboard thing that came as cover to our young one's floor mat thing.  It looked like something that I could use, so I cut a hole in it for my head and decided to use it as some sort of armor.  I drew a spade on it and pasted all sorts of playing cards on it and I must say, it doesn't look too bad for something I mad on a whim.  Check it out.
Then, I realized...  These guards have spears!  Well, at least the OG ones from the original Alice in Wonderland did.  I haven't seen the remake so I don't know how the guards come out in the film.  I don't have a spear...  BUT I DO HAVE A SWORD!  So I texted my comadre to make sure was cool with me taking a sword to a party.  I wouldn't hurt any one with it, but it is considered a weapon and well, you know, I wanted to make sure she would be comfortable with me taking it.  After she said that would be awesome, I took a pic.  Lo and behold...
Don't I look heroic?  Not too bad, right?  lol  My wife plans on going a flower.  She's gonna put in a few flowers in her hair and wear an Alice shirt that she has.  It would have been cool if she would have gotten the Queen part.  Then I'd be guarding the Queen all night long, but you know what.... there's nothing wrong with standing guard over my precious flower.  I'll try to take some pics tonight and post a few.  Until then... Later!

Valentine's Day

Hey there.  Valentine's Day was this weekend and many of us were off buying our significant other stuff or celebrating in our own special way.  My wife decided to go to the gym that morning and I surprised her with a bouquet of purple roses and heart shaped french toast.  I know, I know...  I try.  lol  Later that day, we went off to see our godson.  We haven't seen him for a few years.  There's some issues between his parents and at the time he's living with his mother up north so it's a rare occurrence when he's in town.  So we spent most of the afternoon at Chuck E Cheese to spend some time with him.  Afterward, we dropped off our kids at my mother in laws and I took my wife out to dinner.

I've been wanting to take my wife out to someplace fancy, but I fear that she may not like the cuisine.  I just don't see us hanging out having caviar and escargot with some wine.  lol  I just don't see us as that type of couple.  However, I would like to find a place that is considered "fancy" AND meet our culinary needs.  lol  Anyways, so I asked her where she would like to go and without hesitation she says Red Lobster.  Now...  I know that my wife cannot stand seafood so I know for a fact that it's not really a place she wants to go and it's more of a place that I would like to eat at.  I love me some seafood but it just doesn't seem fitting for Valentine's Day.  To appease her, we checked it out.  We walk in and I see a crowd.  Wow....  I ask the woman what the wait time is for two and lets me have it straight.  2 hours to 2 and half hours.  Oh man... Hell with that... we're not going to wait that long.  I guess I was wrong about it not being the spot for Valentine's Day, huh.  lol

So we hopped in the car and we decided to check out the Elephant Bar.  A restaurant that offers "exotic" cuisine.  Stuff from the orient, seafood, steaks, burgers ( I think) among other choices.  We've been to the Elephant Bar a handful of times and I can't quite remember what I've had there.  So I walk in and ask for the wait time for two.  An hour to and hour and 30 mins...  Not bad, I guess.  So I she takes my name and my wife and I decide to walk to the mall and get us some frozen yogurt.  I kid you not, the moment we stepped out, getting ready to return to the restaurant, that pager thingy that they hand out to you started lit up and started buzzing.  Oh crap!  We had to hurry to the restaurant to make sure they didn't give our table away cause we didn't answer the call.  What a way to spend part of your Valentine evening... running through a parking lot getting to the restaurant!

Once we were seated, we ordered our drinks and glanced at the menu.  I'll admit that I can be pretty blah when it comes to ordering food from a place that I'm not that familiar with but recently, I've been a bit bold and tried something new wherever we go.  My wife knew exactly what she wanted while I had to skim through the menu several times to find something that seemed enticing.  I was settled on some chicken something covered in mushroom sauce.  Look good, but never had it, so I decided to try it out.  At the last second, I changed it to a Philly cheese steak sandwich.  lol

After having a few laughs, enjoying our meal, and feeling slightly tipsy, we headed off to pick up our kids and head home.  Not too bad for a day where we told ourselves "no gifts".  =o)  My wife enjoyed her gifts of roses and two white bears sitting on a love seat and I love her gift to me, her 10 reasons why she loves me.  Check it out:

In honor of Valentine's day here are the top ten reasons I love my husband:

1) His sense of humor-never fails to make me laugh my ass of. Even when I'm mad at him.

2) His intelligence- it's so sexy.

3) How he'll ask me to dance even if there's no music, he'll hum a tune.

4) That goofy voice he does when I'm upset or had a rough day all to make me laugh.

5) How he tells me im beautiful when i wake up in the morning

6) How he knows just what to say- baby you look tired, go take a nap I'll take care of dinner.

7) How he loves me even when I'm unlovable

8) The origami flowers he leaves on my desk for me when i come out of a meeting.

9) "Skittles"

10) His butt lol

I'm a VERY lucky girl =)

I love you too babe.  Later!

Where Did Metallman Go???

Hey there. I'm so so sorry that I haven't had a post in about 2 weeks. I'll be honest, I've gotten to the point where I opened up a new post, but no words were written. Canceled the post and figured that I would do it later. It just never happened. I still owe my readers cash and credits to the top blogs of the month and top commentators of the month. I just haven't gotten around to it. I also have some pizza coupons that I will be giving away soon so make sure that you stay tuned for that.

Work has been hectic, my cousin was in and out of the hospital due to a mental condition, which I have checked in on, I have now become a Lost addict (I know I'm about 6 years late to the party) and our son's birthday was this week. So there have been topics available for posting, it's just that for whatever reason, my fingers refused to write them down. Well, I guess that funk is over. We got the Motivational Sunday coming back tomorrow, as well as the Super Bowl! Valentines Day is on it's way and today, we're off to John's Incredible Pizza for our son's B Day celebration. Nothing big, but a place where I know he'll have fun. I'll make sure to keep you guys more filled in than I have in the last few weeks.

My son just got up. I'm helping around the house so it's my time to feed the baby. I'll catch you guys later!

My Wife is on a Bad Wheel

Hey there. My wife has been on a mission to lose all the baby weight from the pregnancy. She's made it a habit to go walk and run along the river bed and ease her way into a daily workout. Yesterday, she went off to do her thing. Well, she must have stepped on something or stepped on kind of slant in the road because before long, she sent me a text saying that she couldn't walk. I was worried. I responded and asked if she was ok, she said yeah but that she was having trouble walking. She made it to her mom's place and continued to talk to me there. Turns out that she may have sprained her ankle.

She was able to walk gingerly at first but as the night progressed, she had trouble getting around. Once we got home, she lied down in bed and I wrapped up her ankle in hopes that it will be feel better later on. She soon after fell asleep.

This morning, I let her sleep in while the kids and I are taking care of business. I made french toast for breakfast and we have decorated our Christmas tree. We've also swept and mopped the floors. Im waiting on my wife to get up so that I can go and get an amp that is a part of our son's gift. We decided that it would be cool to hand down my first guitar to our son as his first guitar. I cleaned it up some, changed the strings, but need a beginner's amp for him.

Hopefully, when my wife gets up, she'll be ok. I looked at her facebook page not that long ago and see that her concern was not being able to play drums for our Rockband night. What a trooper. lol Until then. Later!

Demon in the Mirror?

Hey there. There have been a lot of talk about the paranormal as of late. New Ghost Hunters on TV, new paranormal movie and what not. It's a subject that grabs my attention. We don't fully understand the world we live in. Sometimes, things happen that are so "unnatural" to us that we boggle our minds with how and why it happened. Well, this weekend, my brother showed me a video that had some paranormal activity in it. Things such as poltergeists in action and what not, but the video that really caught my attention was this one. Check it out.

And That Makes 4

Hey there. Just got back from a baby shower that my mother threw for us. That brings the total to 4 baby showers! We still have the stuff in the car. We'll go get to it tomorrow. Right now, we're just going to sit back and chill in bed. I don't feel like doing any online work tonight. I'll just catch up on all of today's NFL action. Later.

Breakfast, Car and the Hospital

Hey there. What a day. I decided last night that I would treat the family to breakfast this morning. Yesterday, while I was at work, my wife was enjoying breakfast at IHOP. I wanted IHOP! lol I think it was more me not wanting to be at work. lol Anyways, we got up this morning having most of our planned out.

We left this morning for breakfast at around 9 to 9:30. We went to Norms for breakfast. We had ourselves a lot of food. We all had pancakes and steak and what not. We didn't finish it but while we sat there we decided that we needed to go to the hospital to register. It helps to register early so that when it's baby time, the hospital will have all your info and you're streamlined into a room. I told my wife that I wanted to get everything done today so that I could watch football tomorrow uninterrupted. We agreed and the next stop was the bank.

We need a bigger vehicle. Our Mazda Protege does not accommodate more than 5 people and once the baby is here, we'll be a family of 6. There is a friend of the family that fixes cars for a living. The guy is straight up with us and tell you exactly how it is. You pretty much tell him the model of car you want, he'll go out and bid on one for you, he'll fix it up, and then you pick it up. My wife's family has bought 3 cars from him, including the one we drive now so we have the utmost confidence that he will be able to get us a reliable vehicle.

So after getting the money we were off to drop off our deposit. Then we realize... Our registration papers are at my mother in laws house so we have to go and pick them up. So off we go to go and get them. Naturally, it was out of our way. lol Once we pick them up, we get some directions from my brother in law and off we go to drop off our deposit. The ride over there sucked. Living in LA, I'm used to being able to reach my destination via freeway. Well, we couldn't reach him via freeway so we driving through the streets for most of the way. Stop and go traffic is frustrating. So we finally get there and I tell the guy what we're interested. We'll looking for a Mazda MPV. Mazda's are reliable. I have not had one person say that they are not happy with their Mazda. So once we give him the scoop, I get my receipt and off we go to the hospital.

Just my luck, my boy decided to tell me about some cool thing he read in his Game Informer magazine and I ended up taking the wrong exit and drove a few miles in the wrong direction. After getting off the freeway and going back towards downtown Los Angeles, we finally make it to the hospital. We grab our forms and into the hospital we go. We tell the security that we're here to register and guess what he says. Guess....

"Sorry. Admissions is closed today."

UGH!!!! All that driving and we can't even register?! My wife showed the security that the admission form that she filled out clearly state that admissions is closed at 8:30 PM. The guy says that admissions is closed at 12:30 PM on Saturdays and it being close to 3:00 PM, then points to the admission desk and shows that there's no one there. My wife and I were upset. We walked out in disgust and head towards to the car.

We jump back on the freeway and head towards Babies R Us. I promised my wife that we would purchase the crib bedding. Once at the store, we browse around and end up with more than the bedding. We got a sheet and a mobile as well at this really cool emergency kit with medicine. Afterwards, we finally headed for home. We must have gotten there at around 4:30 ish. That is approx. 7 hours away from home and a good chunk of that was spent driving. Needless to say, we are tired.

My mother sent me a text saying that she MAY stop by tomorrow with a crib so that we can have it set up. Baby may coming soon and that's the last piece of furniture that we need. Hopefully, she'll show up tomorrow and get that set up. Until then, later.

Bed Rest: Day 2

Hey there. My wife is going insane. She says that she already did everything that she can do while in bed rest. She's already watched movies and TV, we've already played board games, she's read a book and magazines, she's gotten online on her laptop, and she can't get laid, lmao, there's nothing left, according to her. She's pushing me to find a wheel chair so that I can get push her around the mall. She says that her mom has a wheel chair and I can go get it so that she can get out of the house. I'm taking the bed rest thing seriously. I try to help her get up and go to the restroom and I really try not to let her get up at all. She's sending text messages to all her friends asking them to help her. A friend just suggested that I lay down next to my wife and she can kick me a few times while she yells, "You did this to me!" lmao Oh man, that was hilarious.

We are watching The Simpson's movie, but we've seen this already so my wife is tuning it out. We're about to watch Quarantine in a few minutes. We recorded it on DVR so that we can watch it at a later time. That time is now. Well, when she's done laughing at all the text messages she's received. lol I'll catch ya guys later. Later.

Bed Rest: Day 1

Hey there. Yesterday my wife went in to see her doc for a check up. And guess what, she placed my wife in bed rest. From what I remember my wife telling me, the doc said that she's having light contractions and she's dilated 1 cm. My wife told her that she's still working and Dr. Bohn pretty much said no more. My wife did look like she was having trouble walking and she was having some stomach pains. She showed up at work following her doc appointment and pretty much told everyone that she's not coming back until post baby. lol Some people refused to believe it. Especially since she wasn't scheduled to be out until late September. Now, she's bored out of her mind being stuck in bed.

I helped her over to the living room and we've been hanging out here, watching some movies. We caught Be Kind Rewind and are now watching some movie on Lifetime. I don't have the remote with me and I'm too lazy to get up and get it. lol So yeah, I'm watching a lifetime movie while writing this post. Once the movie is over, I'll be playing Rock band with the kids. I promised them that I would play with them this week since I've been putting it off for quite sometime. They want to play some kind of marathon gig in the game. Something along the lines of a 12 song set list that needs to be completed in one sitting. You'll have to start from the beginning if you don't get through it.

My wife feel asleep. I don't think we'll be playing Rock band anytime soon. She needs to rest and take it easy. It looks like Baby Metallman will be early. It's just a matter of how early. I'll keep ya posted. Later!

A Baby Shower and I Know Who Killed Me

Hey there. We are dead tired this Sunday. Last night, my mother in law threw a surprise baby shower for my wife. We got there at 4:30 and we were one of the first ones there so my wife didn't get the huge surprise that we hoped for. She was surprised though. She was expecting family over to watch a fight, so she expected to see people, but she peeked outside from the kitchen window and saw the baby decorations and started laughing. lol We ended up helping my mother in law most of the night. My wife more so that I. My mother in law served up some shrimp cocktail and because she didn't have much help in preparing the food, it wasn't ready when we got there so we helped out. My mother and grandma showed up after awhile and I couldn't help much since I was hanging out with them most of the night. My wife, on the other hand, was on her feet the whole night, helping her mom. Once it got dark, someone looked towards the hills and noticed that the fires that are burning up Los Angeles are visible. The past few days have been horrible and you could only see smoke from where we were at, but last night, the flames were clearly visible as they stretched across the hills. Scary sight. I tried to take pictures from my phone and camera, but no dice. It's tough to take a picture of a far away scene in the dark.

Today, we are feeling dead tired. My wife can't be on her feet, they hurt her so, so we've been lounging around at home catching movies. One movie that had caught my wife's attention was I Know Who Killed Me. I want to say it was because Lindsay Lohan stars in the movie and I think she got pretty bad reviews. When we hear that a movie is awful, we like to check it out and see the horrors for ourselves. lol The movie is not all that great. It's very choppy and there is no rhythm to the movie. Scenes are short, it continuously jumps from scene to scene, flash backs are thrown in at awful times, and the acting is pretty bad. Not a movie that I recommend. As soon as it was over, it was deleted from our DVR. Not worthy to stay on there any much longer.

I then went to get us some ice cream. No smiles in them today. lol But they so hit the spot in this 90+ degree weather... I am so not a fan of summer.

My wife soon dozed off to sleep and I continued to look for movies. I caught some of my early teen favorites. Major Payne finished not too long ago and now Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is on. lol They are not great movies and borderline awful, but they're "fun" and I like to see movies from my youth. These are those kind of movies that my bro and I laughed our butts off when we were younger. lol

Let me get back to Ace. I'll catch you guys later!

Labor Day is Coming

Hey there. I started thinking about Labor Day and what we should plan for that weekend. It's still a week or so away but if you're going to make plans, you should make them early. I was thinking of maybe taking the family to the Grand Canyon. I've never been and I think the kids would get a trip out of it. Then I read that it's an 8 hour car ride from Los Angeles and I quickly scratched that idea. My wife, being preggers, shouldn't be sitting for 8 hours straight. I don't think it's healthy. So now I'm trying to find alternatives. It would be good to take a short drive somewhere and enjoy the sites. Maybe a camping trip. That sounds like fun. The kids and I have never gone camping before so I think it would be cool. Maybe rent a cabin somewhere or something like that. I'm still not sure. I wouldn't mind doing something in the mountains. I've never been to the mountains. lol I love to check that out and maybe see some snow. I've never seen snow so that would be awesome. lmao

Since there have been much stuff that I haven't done before, I think we're going to go camping, in the mountains, and see some snow. lmao Or maybe not, I don't know just yet. I'll look into the camping thing, though. That sounds like it would be a fun activity to do that weekend. Weekend camping tips, here I come. Later.

Smiling Ice Cream

Hey there. Have you guys seen anything like it? lol I went out to get my wife some rainbow sherbet earlier in the day. I just opened the container and look at what I see. The ice scream so happened to be waiting there, smiling at me. Is that crazy or what? lol I compared experience to that of those that see Jesus in a tree or the Virgin Mary in a tortilla. lol My wife suggested that it was the baby smiling because at me because I got the ice cream that he craved. What do you think? What this merely coincidence that it's smiling? Or maybe, divine intervention? Maybe it was worker intervention and thought that it would be a trip to surprise a consumer with a smile. lol Either way, we thought it was hilarious. lol

Oh... This just dawned on me... Maybe it's my pops, smiling down on us knowing that a little one is on the way. You never know, crazy things have happened here before. Like Odin, our dog, mysteriously appearing in the house after locking him outside or the Corona bottle that opened on it's own... Could be... Hmmmm... Interesting. Later.

Weekend Internet Hiatus

Hey there. I took the weekend off. I did not go online at all this weekend. lol I took a two day sabbatical from all things internet, well almost everything. I still had Email. But anyways, my wife brought up a point on Friday night when I was doing my online work. I mentioned something along the lines of it being a drag to get my work done at night so that don't have to do it during the day. My wife responded to that by saying something along of the lines of "don't do it religiously and take it easy." I wouldn't say I do it religiously, but I've come to realize that it's more of a habit now. I tend to work online until about 11:00 to 11:30 PM. That's the time I go to sleep anyways so I figured that I might as well get some work done. This weekend, I felt like I SHOULD be working at night since I couldn't sleep anyways. I refrained, but it felt off. It felt weird that I wasn't online at night. I stayed in bed and watched TV but at the end of the night, I couldn't really sleep because I felt as if my routine threw off my body. I actually stayed up later than usual. Go figure...

We did have an eventful weekend, though. Once I'm able to get some pictures, I'll post. If anything, I really regret that I forgot my camera at work since I wasn't able to take pics of our event myself. Until then, later.

Bluelight Specials at Kmart

Hey there friends. Kmart is having a sale! You know me, I'm always good to save a few bucks. Especially now that we have a little one on his way, every dollar that we can save will help us in the long run. This is why I'm glad that the Kmart Bluelight specials are back. I mean, we already shop at Kmart and it's been awhile since I've heard the PA system announce a Bluelight item.

It's about time, if you ask me. Since the kids will be back in school soon, we'll be hitting up the local Kmart on Aug. 15th (this Saturday) to take advantage of the 40+ Bluelight Specials that they have planned. Since the kids will need back to school items, we're definitely going for backpacks, since they just don't seem to make it past a full year. lol So it would be great to get a $20 back pack for $8 during their Bluelight special. Come to think of it, we could also use some patio furniture. I got our shed up this week and since I got it up, my wife and I created a lot more patio space now that the items that cluttered the patio are now in the shed. Patio furniture will be on sale (70% off) but if we get there for the Bluelight special, it's an additional 20% off! We need a patio set of some kind. Maybe a bench and a table with at least 4 lawn chairs. We have an open space in our back yard that we just don't hang out on because there isn't a table with chairs there. When we have company over, we usually stay indoors since there really isn't anywhere to seat our guests when we walk outside. And you know what else I can pick up while there? A grill! My wife and I were just talking about getting one yesterday. I had a small, old grill that wasn't covered (again, no shed) so it got ruined by the sun and rain and needed to be thrown out. Now that we have a place to shelter a grill, I can look into getting a decent sized grill. Something where I can grill more than 4 or 5 patties at once. Thinking realistically, I doubt that I would be able to get all the items that I need, UNLESS, the price is right! Considering that the price is slashed significantly during Bluelight time, maybe I'll be lucky enough to get everything I want. We'll see what I can score from Kmart come Aug. 15th! If by chance we won't be able to make it to Kmart, we'll check out Kmart.com, since they'll be having their own set of Bluelght specials there. Hmmm.... maybe we should do some online shopping since I know my wife can't be up on her feet for so long. Then again, I've never heard her say no to shopping in store so maybe we will end up going. lol

I also started following Kmart on Twitter, since I've discovered that they offer printable coupons for items. Who wouldn't want to score free coupons? I'm looking at one right now where I can get a free set of wooden pencils for buying back to school stuff. I'm going to buy back to school items anyways, so yeah, I want free pencils too. lol Sale starts Aug 15h, friends. Check it out. You know we will. Later.

Mission: Shed, Almost Complete

Hey there. It's been forever, it seems, but I finally got our shed up. After months and months of cement bags sitting by the side of the house, the foundation for the shed was set in place. All last week, I started to build our shed after work. Knowing that I would not be able to complete it all at once, I built the frame first and decided to wait until the weekend to really tackle the job. Sometime during the week, my wife told me that she hired her brother to come and help me during the weekend. I figured it was ok, since we sent our boy to summer camp for the week, he would be a good help and someone to talk to while building the shed. He helped me put up the walls of the shed but he was really helpful when it came to put up the roof beams. I don't think I would have been able to that on my own so I'm glad he was there for that. We left the shed, partially complete Saturday night and I continued the work on Sunday. I managed to get the roofing 95% done. Roofing was a HUGE pain to do. Not so much because the sheet metal was heavy, but because I couldn't reach some of the openings on the roof to screw in the bolts. It was frustrating me and it came down to me not screwing them all in and having to get on the roof of the shed to do it. I still need to do some now but that will have to wait until next weekend. I need to screw in the last 2 pieces of the shed. Since the roofing is at an angle, I need to finish off the highest point of the shed (I can't think of the name right now but you'll see what I'm talking about in the pictures).

The dogs thought it was their mansion. They walked in and out of the place like they owned it. The girls are pretty happy with it. They kept walking in and out of it and they helped where they can. My wife is glad it's finally done. We can finally move some of our stuff outside to create even more space for the baby. We've been storing all kinds of stuffs in our closets so it's going to be nice to get all stuff outside. It's also going to make our yard look a lot better. We have bikes and tools and all kinds of stuff that is just lingering in the yard. Finally, we'll have a place to put all that away. I strongly recommend you guys get one, if you don't have one already. Check out the pics of our shed. Later.

Orphan - A Film Review

Hey there. This weekend, my wife and I treated ourselves to a movie. My wife is not a horror buff. She's not one to go out and look for a "scary movie" to watch and any film of that nature that she does watch is because I wanted to see it. One such film is Orphan. I was captivated by the movie posters and commercials and I knew that I wanted to catch this film. An opportunity presented itself this weekend while my mother in law watched the kids.

***WARNING!!! SPOILERS BELOW***

I must admit that the advertising for this film sucked me in. As previously stated in this post , I asked the question if this film will follow suit of other films like The Good Son or The Omen. The advertising definitely made it seem that way, with the majority of it focusing on Esther and her "secret". Upon seeing the film, I am glad to say that the movie wasn't so much about Esther, but just as much about the family in the film.

The film is a refreshing in the sense that it did not follow the typical format of a horror film. A typical horror film will showcase the antagonist killing off various characters in the film, while the protagonist goes about and discovers the identity, or weakness, of the antagonist. While the film does have it's path that will label it as horror, the film really shines when it comes to the actors and their portrayal of the characters. It is great to have a film where the characters are well developed. You feel for these people as for what they have gone through by the brilliant acting. You have the cheating husband in John (Peter Sarsgaard) that tries to wrong his right, you have the ex-alcoholic mother Kate (Vera Farmiga) who continues to battle those demons, you have the over zealous and negligent son Daniel (Jimmy Bennett), you have a partially deaf child Max (Aryana Engineer)(which may or may not have been cause by her mother) and then you have the problematic "child" in Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). This is not your happy-super-go-lucky family. This is a family that has issues and had issues before we were introduced to them. Esther did not cause these problems, she merely added on and intensified what was already in disarray. Esther's character is not so much as the "kill 'em" type as she is more the master manipulator. Such as when she hugs her daddy extra tight while staring at Daniel with a slight smirk on her face. Your first glimpse into who Esther really is.
The script is so well written and the characters so well played that the film earns a great rating on that alone. Being that this is a horror film, you do not generally see great acting and horror in the same sentence, yet this film pulls it off beautifully. Not to mention to the great cinematography. The camera angles are perfect and the scenery only amplifies the senses. As Esther walks down the cold, icy snow, it doesn't help but illuminate that cold, stark stare that Esther does oh so well. Another great shot that showcases such control of her facial expressions is that during the hospital scene. As Daniel is fighting for his life, due to Esther's misdeeds, she puts on her sweet child act to her grandmother. Once she receives the money to go get a soda, she gets up and walks towards the hallway. A beautiful smile crosses her face, as any child would have after getting what they wanted, but the moment Esther walks past the window and her grandmother could not see her, the smile vanishes without a trace and that cold stare is full front and center. These are the shots that make the movie so great.

Max is another character who is vital to the movie's success. Because she is deaf, she has learned to read lips and uses sign language. Esther manipulates her younger sister to read lips and tell her what's going on when Esther cannot hear. Considering Max always wanted a younger sister, she covers for Esther when she witnesses Esther in full fledged evil. Another strong point in regards to Max is her character development. As a deaf child, you'd figure that the film will follow suit with many other films and place Max as a character with a serious disability. On the contrary, we see Max grow stronger as the film goes on. As a timid child who is shy to hug her new sister Esther, to a child that is capable of knowing that her mother's life is in her hands and is firing a pistol. Another great aspect that was very well played by the filmmakers are the silent scenes. Max wears a hearing aid, since she is partially deaf, and when we see that she takes them off, the film goes silent. This is used to GREAT effect... Especially well done, right before Esther attempts to seduce John.
Kate's character could be considered the protagonist of the film. Some may argue that it would be Max, since Max is the character that develops the most during the film. When Kate claims that "there must be something wrong with Esther", the whole world looks down on her and chalks it up to Esther being a child in transition. She battles through her demons throughout the film and nearly relapses back to drinking. Everyone ignores Kate's concerns and she, and the audience, feel as if she is alone in her attempt to uncover Esther's past. Esther manipulates the facts to make Kate almost a non-factor until the end of the film when she is the only one left to take actions on her findings. A great scene that highlights these frustrations explodes during the hospital scene. Esther wasn't really going to get a soda, she was going to finish off Daniel in his hospital bed. Max, realizing that Esther is taking longer than needed, told her grandma that she was going to get Esther. When she sees that Esther is not at the soda machine, she runs to her mother and tells her to check on Daniel. At that moment, an emergency alarm is set off in Daniel's room, since he flat lined due to Esther suffocating him with a pillow. As the family is being kept out of Daniel's room, Kate runs off to Esther. Seeing that Esther is walking with a soda, Kate runs up to her and unleashes her pent up anger and strikes Esther, knocking her down in front of the medical staff. Great stuff!

This is definitely a movie that you need to see. The script is very well acted out and the tension builds slowly, but when it explodes, the climax is gratifying. It's not a disappointment (*cough *cough The Happening *cough *cough) or expected. The scene that brings it all together was original. Again, hints are scattered throughout the film and when it brings it all together, you think back at those hints. A great example of this is when Esther is flickering her black light on and off. You only see that cold stare appearing and reappearing as she turns that light on and off. Later in the film, you understand why... She was admiring her work. Being an artist, she painted with such skill that it generated much attention. Seen through normal light, they look normal. When a black light is held against them, they display a grotesque painting. Special emphasis on her "orphanage". A beautiful painting of her orphanage in Russia turned to one engulfed in flames when the black light is held against it. It was a great way to display both sides of Esther is an extremely creative way.
Again, I greatly enjoyed Orphan. If you are looking for a new breath of fresh air in the horror genre, you definitely need to check this out. It's a nice contrast to have a well scripted and well acted horror film. "There's something wrong with Esther", and there's definitely something wrong with you if you do not go and see this film. Later.
