How to Keep Your Canine Cool in Summer

Dog in car
Hey there.  Summer is a time to be outside, enjoying the bright sunshine and warm evenings. You and your dog can enjoy these months together but keeping Fido cool is imperative. This is because dogs are more prone to heat stroke than their human owners are. But if you take the appropriate steps in keeping your canine pal cool during the summer months, you can keep them safe while having their fun in the sun.

Avoid Strenuous Activities During Hottest Parts of Day

The hottest part of the day is in the afternoon, between noon and three. To keep your dog cool and avoid the risk of heat stroke, do not walk your dog during this point of the day. If he must go outside to use the restroom, ensure he comes directly back in. If you and your dog are outside during this time, try to keep your pet in a cool shady spot.

Allow Constant Access to Fresh Water

This is THE most crucial factor in keeping your dog cool. Dehydration can come quick when dogs become overheated even the slightest bit. Whether inside the home, playing in the yard, or on a walk, always have fresh, cool water on hand. You can purchase a collapsible cup to carry with you when away from the comforts of home.

Trim Their Coats

Dog breeds with long coats should have it trimmed when the temperature starts to rise. One popular breed prone to overheating because of a long, thick coat are Golden Retrievers. You can find more information on the breed at https://www.puppyjoy.net/breed/golden-retriever-puppies. As a rule, a dog’s coat should be trimmed if it is long enough to brush backwards.

Offer Less Food
Offer pets slightly less food during the summer months than you would in winter. For example, if your large breed dog normally eats two cups of kibble twice a day in the winter, try offer 1 ½ cups instead. The process of digesting their food causes a dog’s body temperature to rise. When the weather is already warm, this can be a significant contributing factor in heat stroke.

Use Ice Cubes and “Pup”-sicles

“Pup”-sicles are frozen treats for dogs that can be offered after a walk or playtime in the yard. They can include a variety of different ingredients, such as peanut butter, bananas, apples, bacon, chicken, and pears. You can find a lot of great recipes online for these treats. Also place ice cubes in your dog’s bowl to keep his water cooler.

By using these great tips, you can help keep your canine cool all summer, so they can enjoy the warm weather with you safely. Remember to always watch for signs of overheating, such as lethargy, panting, or confusion. If you think your dog is suffering from overheating, cool them off with running water or damp, cooled rags and take them to the vet immediately. Remember that it is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the health of your precious companion.
